About
Clare Cooper Marcus is Professor Emerita in the Departments of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley. She is the Principal of Healing Landscapes, a consulting firm that specializes in an evidence-based design approach to the programming, design, and evaluation of outdoor spaces in healthcare settings.
Professor Marcus is internationally recognized for her research on the social and psychological implications of design, particularly urban open space, affordable housing, healing gardens, and environments for children and the elderly. She has lectured and consulted in the United States, Canada, Britain, Scandinavia, Netherlands, Italy, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand, and China.

Projects
– Consulting with PGA Designs, Oakland, CA on the design of a hospice garden at the Men’s Correctional Facility, Vacaville CA
-Consulting with Raphael Vinoly, Architects, and Project for Public Spaces on the design of a roof garden for a new building at Stanford Medical Center, Palo Alto, CA.
-Consulting with Professor Susan Rodiek, Center for Health Systems and Design, Texas A & M University, on images and content in three videos entitled “Access to Nature for Older Adults: Promoting Health through Landscape Design.”
-Post-occupancy evaluations of six healthcare gardens in the Chicago area for Hitchcock Design Group, Naperville, IL (with Marni Barnes)

Honors and Awards
2010 ASLA Honor Award, Research Category, as part of team headed by Professor Susan Rodiek, Center for Health Systems and Design, Texas A&M University, for DVD-based educational program — “Access to Nature for Older Adults: Promoting Health through Landscape Design”
2010 Honorary ASLA
2008 American Publishers Award for Professional and Scholarly Excellence in the Architecture and Urban Planning Category for “Biophilic Design: The Theory, Science and Practice of Bringing Buildings to Life”, in which chapter with Robin Moore appeared, “Healthy Planet, Healthy Childhood: Designing Nature into the Daily Spaces of Childhood”
